Gospel reflection: A humble heart

Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God

Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. (Luke 2:19)

May the Virgin make our hearts humble and submissive like her son’s heart. In her, the heart of Jesus was formed.

Let us learn to be humble, accepting humiliations with joy. We have been created for great things — why then should we stoop to things that would blur the beauty of our heart?

How many things can we learn from the Virgin! … Ask Jesus to help you personalize your love for Mary — in order to be sources of joy, as he is; in order to be closer to her, as he is; in order to share with her everything, even the cross. Every one of us must carry his or her own cross; it is our sign of belonging to Christ. We need Mary to help us share it.

Mary’s greatness lay in her humility. It is not surprising that Jesus, who lived so close to her, seemed determined to have us learn one thing above all: humility of heart.
